Irish Yacht sails off without crew

August 6th, 2007 by yachtbud

Here is a quirky story from the Irish Independent Newspaper. Well, Fionnbar Hegarty lost his yacht from it’s mooring in Mullaghmore Harbour on Friday night. The North West Coast was hit by one of the largest swells of the summer and Fionnbar’s 22 ft yacht went sailing off on it’s own.

The RNLI was called and the yacht was found on Saturday on Tullan Beach, 5 kilometers away, virtually unharmed. Sailor Hegarty declared it a ‘miracle’: “The rudder has been smashed and, to say the least, it has had an extremely good spring cleaning inside.

“It is an absolute miracle,” he said. “I had it moored with one of the thickest tethers available and heavily anchored. But nature can always defy the odds,” he added.

Aye, that’s a salty dog story if ever I heard one. The original story is by Anita Guidera and can be read here: Independent.ie
