Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta starts in ideal conditions

April 20th, 2008 by yachtbud

Velsheda coming through Sunshine, blue skies and a decent breeze saw off the fleet of 61 yachts in 12 competitvive classes on Friday 18th April, 2008. I was lucky enough to be on the start line for Day 1 in my trusty inflatible. The swell was several feet high and viewing, driving a taking photos proved interesting. Lucky enough on Day 2, Saturday, I was privilged to sail with ‘Galatea’ last year’s winner and Vintage Class A favourite.

For full results I suggest you visit www.yachtscoring.com. On the first day overall honours went to ‘Ticonderoga’ , the 72ft. 1936 Herreshof ketch in Vintage Class A. ‘Galatea’ failed by starting early, maybe due to a temporary blindness which affects crew in the Caribbean and believed to be a side effect of rum. The awesome J’s ‘Velsheda’ and ‘Ranger’ shot around the course and finished 1st and 2nd in their class and in 2nd and 3rd of overall results on Day 1.

Conditions remained good on Day 2 with just about the same wind conditions despite dire warnings from the weather experts. In prelimary results ‘Galatea’ beat ‘Ticonderoga’ on corrected time and ‘Velsheda’ took ‘Ranger’ for the second day. In Classic Class A lovely ‘Elenora’ has two firsts so far with Aschanti IV and ‘Whitehawk’ taking 2nd and 3rd position on both days. In Classic Class B it’s been ‘Juno’ two days in a row. ‘Altair’ been sailing well in Vintage Class B. In the Traditional Class ‘Genesis’, the Carriacou built boat has the front runner. Nine Dragons have been competiting for the first year and sailor Poul Hoj Jensen has twice taken line honours.

The following photos were taken by me on Day 1 and 2. The on board photos are of Galatea crew and I have tried to identify the yachts around me. Photos from this article can be used as long as you credit and link to www.yachtbuddy.com. Enjoy! Anthony Todd.
