Pindar Dismasted at Skandia Cowes Week

More action on the sailing circuit at Skandia Cowes Week today when Pindar, the brand new Open 60 was dismasted during the inaugural Artemis Challenge today. Launched in July, Pindar was dismasted between The Needles and St Catherines whilst Mike Sanderson was skippering the yacht with Pindar Chairman Andrew Pindar and yacht designer Juan Kouyoumdjian aboard.
The Artemis Challenge is included in this year’s Skandia Cowes Week as a shakedown for the Rolex Fastnet Race scheduled for next week. The revolutionary designed mast snapped off two metres from the deck in only 14 knots of breeze.
Estrella Damm, one of the new generation of Open 60’s took line honours. Will Greenwood, the former England rugby star helped bring her to victory earning over $20,000 for their nominated charity the Spanish Africa Viva charity.

Magellan Straits - This day in History

On August 10th 1519 five ships set sail from Seville Spain under the command of Ferdinand Magellan. Spanish authorities were wary of the Portuguese admiral and almost prevented Magellan from leaving, they eventually switched his crew of mostly Portuguese men with men of Spain.
Stopping at the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands, the ships arrived in Brazil in December of that year. From there they traveled south looking for the strait that Magellan believed would lead to the Spice Islands.
