14 year old sailor in Transatlantic challenge

December 29th, 2006 by Patsy

MICHAEL PARHAM, 14 year old SOLO TRANSATLANTIC SAILOR DUE ON 2ND JANUARY, 2007

Michael Parham, just 14 years old and hoping to break the record for the youngest sailor to cross the Atlantic solo, has only about a week to go before he sails into Falmouth Harbour and moors at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina. He left Gibraltar on 18th November, 2006, on “Cheeky Monkey, a 28ft trailer sailor, shadowed by his father, Peter, in an identical boat.

Mike has been sailing since he was seven and has, to date, covered several thousand sea miles. The current World record challenge will give him an additional 3,500 miles under his sea boots.

A welcoming ceremony is being arranged by the Antigua and Barbuda Marina Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism at the Copper and Lumber Store in Nelson’s Dockyard on the day of Michael Parham’s arrival.
